Zweiter Chefentwickler verlässt das Thunderbird-Projekt

Mal wieder bei Golem gelesen: Thunderbird: Zweiter Chefentwickler geht - Golem.de: "David Bienvenu nur noch bis zum 12. Oktober 2007 bei Mozilla". (Über den ersten habe ich vor ein paar Tagen schon berichtet)

Wie ging noch mal der Spruch mit den Ratten und dem sinkenden Schiff. Ist eigentlich Schade, aber vielleicht kommt so tatsächlich frischer Wind ins Projekt, aber dafür habe ich zu wenig Kenntnis wie es intern in diesem Projekt aussah, bzw. wie es dort jetzt aussieht. Wie viele Chefentwickler gab es insgesamt, waren das die einzigen?

Vielleicht findet sich bei einem Unternehmen das sich in gleichen Gewässern tummelt. Fehlt es dem Star-/OpenOffice-Projekt nicht an einem PIM? Wollte Sun sich nicht für den Thunderbird engagieren? Wäre Schade wenn Thunderbird jetzt einschlafen würde, bisher hat es am ehesten meinen Vorstellungen von einem guten E-Mail-Client entsprochen. Wenn die beiden Chefentwickler wie bei Golem angedeutet an einem neuen E-Mail-Client arbeiten sollten entsteht vielleicht durch diese Arbeit ein vernünftiger Nachfolger, wer weiß...

Der perfekte E-Mail-Client

Was mich sehr reizen würde, wäre wenn sie einige durch Google Mail etablierte Konzepte aufgreifen würden, am besten ein Programm mit ähnlicher Funktionalität wie Google, das aber durch die Unterstützung von IMAP anbieterunabhängig wird, mit einfacher Suche und Labels als Ordner. Der in Opera integrierte Mail-Client geht in diese Richtung, aber ich konnte mich mit ihm nicht wirklich anfreunden, da neben vielen anderen Kleinigkeiten insbesondere Spam sehr komisch behandelt wird, und anstatt es gesondert zu behandeln, wird alles im Eingangsordner angezeigt, und IMAP wird eher etwas stiefmütterlich behandelt. Von S/MIME und PGP/GPG ganz zu schweigen.

Zukunft?

Zu meiner höchst spekulativen Vermutung bezüglich der Mozilla-Strategie, sie seien der Meinung die E-Mail-Funktionalität in Zukunft durch die Browser+Web-Applikation gut abgedeckt wäre, die ich in dem vorherigen Posting zum Abgang des ersten Chefentwicklers geäußert habe, passt auch ein neues Konzept des Site Specific Browsers. Dieses Konzept wurde in der Mozilla-Community in Form des WebRunners aufgegriffen, wovon ich im Lifehacker-Blog erfahren habe. Mit dem WebRunner ist es möglich auf Basis der XulRunner-Laufzeitumgebung einen Browser speziell für Web-Applikationen getrennt vom eigentlichen Standard-WebBrowser. Aufgrund der mangelnden Notwendigkeit werden die meisten oder gar alle typischen Bedienelemente der Browserbenutzerobefläche Web-Applikations-spezifish entfernt, wie bspw. die Adresszeile, Bookmarks, oder Vorwärts- und Rückwartsbuttons. Dafür soll sich die Web-Applikation wie ein lokales Programm verhalten. Einige beispiele für solche im Desktop integrierten Web-Applikationen sind Google Mail (wer hätt's geahnt), Google Reader oder Facebook.

Aber wie schon mal gesagt, mal schauen, was die Zukunft bringt ...

Nachtrag: :-) Juchuu das funktioniert, eine Sache muss man nur beachten, auf der "post done" o.ä. Seite, die nach dem klicken auf "publish post" kommt muss man ein bisschen warten, bis der javascript-script abgearbeitet ist und man eine erfolgsmeldung sieht "trackback is sent" o.ä. ...

das war wohl der falsche script, der nur mit der alten version von blogger funktionierte. jetzt probiere ich mal den neuen script aus, trackback edit-feld scheint schon mal da zu sein mal schauen zu was einträge dort führen werden ... komisch finde ich schon mal dass dieses edit-feld mehrzeilig ist, kann man vielleicht mehrere trackback links dort eintragen? ... naja einfach mal ausprobieren

Thunderbird-Projekt ohne Chefentwickler

Irgendwie habe ich es geahnt dass so etwas kommt. Ich denke, dass Mozilla-Führung der Meinung ist, dass ein E-Mail-Client als eine Anwendung, die auf einem Rechner lokal ausgeführt wird, keine sehr große Zukunft hat, und dass sich diese Anwendungskategorie mehr und mehr zu einer Web-Application hin bewegt. Bestes Beispiel dafür ist Google Mail. Ich denke auch, dass u.a. deswegen dem Thunderbird-Projekt innerhalb von Mozilla nicht genügend Resourcen zugeteilt wurde. Oder es kann auch sein dass sich aus dem gleichen Grund nicht genügend Entwickler an der Mitarbeit bei Entwicklung des "Vogels" interessiert sind. Das alles könnte schließlich dazu geführt haben, dass die Koordinierung der Entwicklung aus der Mozilla Corp ausgegliedert wurde.
Langsam wirds Zeit dass man sich nach Alternativen umschaut ... schade, dass die Windows-Portierung von Evolution bei der Versionsnummer stark hinterherhinkt ...
Naja mal schauen was die Zukunft bringt ...

Getting OpenSSH to work with ssh.com and itself

Problem: The password-less public key authentication mechanisms of OpenSSH, protocol version 1, OpenSSH protocol version 2 and ssh.com's protocol 2 suite don't interoperate seamlessly.

Summary: In this article, I show how I got passwordless authentication amongst these three implementations. This is to be used as a reference for anybody who needs to set up their PKI accross different implementations.

Notes:

Please note that the SSH1 protocol has been known to suffer from a security vulnerability...so if you can help it, upgrade to SSH2 as soon as possible.

Acknowledgments: Richard Silverman, co-author of the O'Reilly "snail book" on SSH has made quite a few comments, which I tried to integrate into this article.

If you're like me and you need work on multiple machines, you might be interested in using public key authentication and passwordless login to save yourself the trouble of typing your password every time you log on to a machine. Unfortunately, there are two popular implementations of ssh (done by OpenSSH and ssh.com) and two protocols (version 1 and version 2) which are not transparently compatible with each other. I've recently had to go through the hassle of making three of the four above combinations work with each other and thought I would sum things up so that somebody else might save their time and sweat.

Here is a simplified version of the configuration that I was dealing with:

Figure 1: There are three computers, all running various versions/distributions of linux and ssh. The three implementations of ssh covered in this configuration network are {(OpenSSH, protocol 1), (OpenSSH, protocol 2), (ssh.com, protocol 2)}. I didn't have to deal with (ssh.com, protocol 1) or any other implementations so they are not covered here. If you have any information on how to get them to work (or just that it was trivial), send me an email and I will integrate your solutions to this document.

Since there are six ways to connect the three different ssh implementations, I will describe how I got each of the six permutations to work. To be clear, the two protocol versions SSH1 and SSH2 do not interoperate, but it is often the case that an SSH2 client or server can operate in SSH1 compatilibity mode, which means that it can talk to an SSH1 client/server. For the rest of this article, I will assume that your SSH2 peer is able to operate in SSH1-compatibility mode. To find out what protocol and implementation you are running on your system, invoke ssh -V. There are examples at the end.

The following are the six interconnects in figure 1. Click the link that represents your own client->server combination.

I apologize, but this two have eluded me. Thus far I've been able to live without them. The problem is that since one side of the connection uses the SSH1 protocol, SSH1 keys are needed on boths sides of the connection. None of the ssh utilities that I have allow the conversion of SSH1 keys and I haven't figured out how to do it manually. If you figure this out, please mail me and I'll post it up.

Generate a pair of SSH1 keys on the client. Take the default key name ~/.ssh/identity

On the server, append the newly obtained key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file, which stores SSH1 public keys in the OpenSSH implementation:

server$ cat ~/.ssh/identity.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Modify the permissions of the authorized_keys file. If this file is write-able by anybody other than the user, then server will deactivate PK authentication.

server$ chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

At the client, decrypt and register your key with the ssh-agent:
At the client, try and login to the server:
client$ ssh server

Password-less login
At this point, you'll probably want to set up passwordless login, which is done with the following commands:
Invoke ssh-agent and it's outputted shell commands:

Decrypt and add your newly generated private key to ssh-agent's database:

client$ ssh-add ~/.ssh/identity

Note: If you are registering another private key, then substitute private key for ~/.ssh/identity:

Now you should be able to do a password-less login to the server:

As you will soon notice, this only gives you password-less login through this terminal. To achieve true one-time per system authentication, I would recommend using the Keychain utility. This involves downloading the keychain program and adding two lines to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile (or ~/.cshrc) files. The utility then keeps you from entering your passphrase more than once.

(openssh, protocol 2)->(openssh, protocol 1)

This one is actually the same as (openssh, protocol 2)->(openssh, protocol 1)

(ssh.com, protocol 2)->(openssh, protocol 2)

There are two caveats here. One is that the ssh.com version (2.4.0) that I was using could only handle dsa encryption/decryption. Secondly, for the OpenSSH server to read ssh.com's public key, you must convert (import) the key from ssh.com's format to OpenSSH's format. Therefore, all pairs needed to be DSA key pairs.
On the client, generate a DSA key pair (default). In the ssh.com implementation, SSH2-related keys go in ~/.ssh2:
client$ ssh-keygen

Copy the newly generated public key to the server's ~/.ssh directory. Notice here that OpenSSH keeps all keys (SSH1 or SSH2) in the ~/.ssh directory:
client$ scp ~/.ssh2/id_dsa_1024_a.pub server:.ssh

On the server, append the newly acquired public key to the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 file. There are two things to notice here. First, we must import the key from the ssh.com public key format to the OpenSSH public key format. Not all versions of ssh-keygen allow you to do this conversion. This is done with the "-i -f " options. Secondly, OpenSSH keeps all SSH2 public keys in the authorized_keys2 file as opposed to the authorized_keys file. Starting with OpenSSH version 2.9, SSH2 keys can also go in the authorized_keys file:
server$ ssh-keygen -i -f id_dsa_1024_a.pub >> authorized_keys2

On the server, make sure that the private key is not write-able by 'group' or 'other':
server$ chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2

On the client, add the line "IdKey id_dsa_1024_a" to the ~/.ssh2/identification file. This tells the ssh client which files contain the private keys:
client$ echo "IdKey id_dsa_1024_a" >> ~/.ssh2/identification

On the client, decrypt and register your key with the ssh-agent
On the client, try a password-less login:

There are a couple of tricks needed to get this pair to work together. First the ssh.com server only understands dsa-style keys, so you have to ask the OpenSSH ssh-keygen program to make you a DSA key. Second, the OpenSSH and ssh.com keys have incompatible formats, so you have to get ssh-keygen to convert your public key from OpenSSH format to ssh.com format. Not all versions of ssh-keygen allow you to do this conversion.

I had two recent eversions of ssh-keygen, both of which were able to convert from ssh.com's public key format to OpenSSH's public key format.
OpenSSH_2.9p2. To convert from ssh.com to OpenSSH:

To convert from OpenSSH.com to ssh.com:

computer$ ssh-keygen -e -f

When developing a web application there is an option in the "config/environment.rb" file that specifies the default timezone of Active Record, "config.active_record.default_timezone". I set this option to ":utc", so now I thought that I can expect that, when I set an attribute of an object being a model that accepts "Time" as type, then Rails should convert dates of any timezone to the default timezone of Active Record. But it doesnt happen. Only when I read attributes from the database they are handled as dates of default timezone:

it fails because rails stored (or better dumped) bob.created localtime to db:
db_record = 9:32 without any convertion and when reloading from db, it handles it as utc time
9:32 (UTC) = 11:32 (localtime).
Instead of dumping the localtime to the db, it would be better when rails converted the time object to UTC and dumped the UTC time to the db!

Maybe I should write a bug report if it is not a feature, but when its a feature its a stupid one!

Hänger beim Windows Update beseitigt

Das regelmäßige minutenlange Auslasten des Prozessors hat mich schon seit einiger Zeit genervt und mich endlich dazu veranlasst den Anweisungen des bei Heise beschriebenen Workarounds folge zu leisten. Habe den Windows-Update-Dienst ausgeschaltet und Inhalt des Ordners C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution in einen Backupordner verschoben. Jetzt dürfte der Nachschlagevorgang nicht mehr so lange dauern, hoffe ich jedenfalls. Der einzige Nachteil bei der Sache ist, dass der Aktualisierungsverlauf unter http://update.microsoft.com nicht mehr angezeigt wird. Aber ich denke damit kann ich besser leben als mit den Wartezeiten bei fast jedem Neustart der Maschine. Die eingespielten Aktualisierungen werden ja teilweise auch in der Systemsteuerung>Software angezeigt.

Günstiges Handy + passender Prepaid Tarif

So ... Weihnachten rückt immer näher und langsam sollte man sich Gedanken um Geschenke machen. Eine Bekannte hat mich gefragt, ob ich ihr nicht bei einem Geschenk helfen würde, ein günstiges Handy mit einem günstigen Tarif. So habe ich mich an einen Testbericht erinnert, über den ich hier schon mal geschrieben habe. Ich denke ich werde das Nokia 1110i empfehlen, welches beispielsweise bei Amazon für 45,00 EUR erhältlich ist. Als Tarif finde ich in diesem Fall Simply (*) am sinnvollsten. Das ist ein Prepaid-Tarif, es gibt keine Grundgebühr etc., der Minutenpreis ist mit 14 ct sehr niedrig, die SMS-Preise sind auch recht günstig, und nach meinen ersten oberflächlichen Recherchen (Link1, Link2, Link3) verfällt das Guthaben nie. Außerdem hat Simply auch ein nettes Empfehlungssystem, wo ich noch mal 10 EUR pro erfolgreiche Empfehlung verdienen kann, ich denke das werde ich auch nutzen, ob das auch für nicht-simply-Kunden geht??

Hier nochmal eine Kriterienliste kombiniert mit einer Checkliste für simply:

Niedrige SMS-Preise (<= 15ct) - 11ct

Im großen und ganzen fallen für mich aber die Nachteile nicht sehr stark ins Gewicht.

Fazit
Das mobiltelefonieren wird immer billiger. Gerätehersteller haben erkannt dass von vielen Kunden einfache Geräte ohne Schnickschnack gewünscht werden. Ein solches Gerät ist das Nokia 1110i für 45 EUR. Dazu passt der simply tarif, ohne versteckte Fallen, der sehr gut für wenigtelefonierer geeignet ist.

PS: Wenn jemand eine noch bessere Kombination von einem Handy + Tarif kennt, raus damit :-)

Hello! I just have found a service on my Windows XP system called "Geacesarp". I couldn't find any Information about it. Neither with Google nor with Yahoo I got any matches. That is very strange. The executable property of the entry in the services control in the control panel doesn't contain anything. I don't know what to do with this service. Can I delete this entry? I think that I let the entry be there and wait if somebody tries to find some information on google or an other search engine and maybe. Maybe he will find this blog entry.

Sysinternals Software unter Microsoft Fittichen!

Allem Anschein nach wurde nach dem Erwerb von Sysinternals durch Microsoft die Entwicklung der Software, die früher von Sysinternals herausgebracht worden ist, in Microsoft TechNet erfolgreich integriert und trägt schon die ersten Früchte ihrer Arbeit. Wie Heise heute berichtete, wurde mittlerweile ein neues Werkzeug, Process Monitor herausgebracht, welches die Funktionalität der schon seit längerem verfügbaren Sysinternals' Werkzeuge Process Explorer, RegMon und FileMon in einem zusammenfasst. Der Download der "älteren" Programme sowie des neuen Process Monitor wird weiterhin kostenlos angeboten. Vereinfacht wesentlich die Arbeit mit eigenen Bildern aus einem Bilderdienst bspw. Flickr, der Blog-Client ist aber noch nicht sehr ausgereift, ich hätte da mehr erwartet. Die serverzentrierte Bookmarkverwaltung hat auch einige Schwächen. Die del.icio.us Erweiterung für den Firefox finde ich viel besser, auch wenn sie auch einige Schwächen hat und keine Open-Source-Lizenz.

Habe mal bei mir das Echtzeitstrategiespiel D-Day installiert, um irgendwann festzustellen, dass sich damit auch der Kopierschutz StarForce auf meinem System einnistet. Dieser Kopierschutz kann ein Rechnersystem unsicherer machen indem es unter Windows Treiber installiert, die von anderer Software als Hintertür benutzt werden kann. Glücklicherweise bietet der russische Hersteller des Kopierschutzes Protection Technology Removal Tool an, womit sich die Treiber entfernen lassen, hoffentlich auch restlos ...

Bug im Subclipse Plugin - Update 3

Es gibt eine einfahere Möglichkeit, mit dem Fehler, über den ich in Bug im Subclipse Plugin - Update 2 berichtet habe, vernünftig arbeiten zu können: Nach dem Synchonisieren bzw. bevor man anfängt die versionierten Dateien zu bearbeiten, sollte man immer ein explizites Update ausführen, ein Synchronisieren allein reicht nicht aus. Es kann natürlich auch sein, dass dieses Verhalten beabsichtigt ist (kein Bug -> ein Feature).

Wird Sysinternals Software jetzt weiterentwickelt?

Der Heise Newsticker berichtete gestern von der Übernahme zweier Firmen Winternals und Sysinternals durch Microsoft. Sysinternals ist vielen als Hersteller von Systemtools wie ProcessExplorer, RegMon oder FileMon ein Begriff. Es stellt sich nun die Frage ob diese Werkzeuge weiterhin als Freeware weiterentwickelt werden oder ob diese Projekte eingestellt werden. Mark Russinovich als einer der Gründer der beiden Firmen betont, dass die kostenlosen Werkzeuge auch weiterhin auf der Website von Sysinternals zum Download bereitgestellt würden, jedenfalls solange bis Microsoft eine Lösung gefunden habe, das Angebot in die eigenen Community-Websites zu integrieren. Er verliert aber kein Wort über die Weiterentwicklung der Werkzeuge.

Viele bisherigen Anwender der Freeware-Programme scheinen nicht davon überzeugt zu sein, weswegen die Website sehr schlecht erreichbar ist. Zu diesen Skeptikern zähle ich mich auch weswegen ich gleich mal einige von den Werkzeugen heruntergeladen habe und sie unter dem Link www.box.net/public/... in einer Zip-Datei verfügbar gemacht habe (SHA1-Prüfsumme: 27D4 7484 01C0 A2FC 012A 3EEF 58AC F766 9918 AC51). Im Zip-Archiv befindet sich auch eine Descriptions.txt Datei, worin eine Kurzbeschreibung der enthaltenen Werkzeuge steht.

Suche nach einem schönem Powered by Firefox Button

Habe heute bei heise gelesen, dass Mozilla plant in Firefox 2.o eine Liste mit jenen zu integrieren, die einen Freund zum Download von Firefox bewogen haben. Hab gleich mal jemanden "geworben", der sich das Programm runtergeladen hat. Dabei schaute ich mal wieder bei SpreadFirefox vorbei und hab gedacht, dass es bestimmt schick wäre, wenn ich in diesem Blog bei der "Powered By" Aufzählung ein Firefox Bildchen einbauen würde. Jetzt muss ich nur noch ein schönes Bildchen finden. Dann werde ich diese mal hier Aufzählen und schaue mal welches davon am besten hier rein passt.

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) Beta 2, deutsch deinstallieren

Ist total bescheuert, dass man den IE nicht auf normalem Wege deinstallieren kann. Systemsteuerung>Software meldet "Windows Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 kann nicht unter diesem Benutzerkonto deinstalliert werden. Melden Sie sich mit dem selben Konto an, mit dem Sie die Installation durchgeführt haben , und wiederholen Sie den Vorgang." Stimmt aber nicht, bin mit dem gleichen Konto eingeloggt, und es klappt nicht.
Hab mal ein bisschen gegoogelt: auf der Website TMG-Hotelgutschein im Forum habe ich was gefunden. Die Anleitung kopiere ich mal hierher:

1. Regedit starten
2. HKEY_CurrentUser
3. Software
4. Microsoft
5. InternetExplorer
6. Rechtsklick darauf > neue Zeichenkette anlegen > Name: InstalledByUser
7. Enter
8. Schlüssel doppelklicken und als Wert den Namen Eures XP-Kontos eintippen
9. Regedit schließen
10. Deinstallation starten (Start/Einstellungen/Systemsteuerung/Software)

Mal schauen ob das klappt
...
Jawoll das hat geklappt :-)

Notiz: Bug im Subclipse Plugin - Update 2

Subclipse Plugin für Eclipse: Entwicklerversion 1.1.2, noch nicht als 1.2.x offiziell veröffentlicht. Die aktuelle stable Version ist die 1.0.3

Die Ordner werden in Eclipse beim einchecken nicht als modifiziert aufgeführt sondern nur die Ordnerinhalte. Das heisst wenn ich Änderungen eines Ornders (wenn sich darin eine Datei geändert hat) commiten möchte registriert Eclipse nur dass die Datei sich geändert hat nicht aber der Ornder und merkt sich nicht die neue Version des Ornders. Im der Arbeitskopie wird also eine veraltete Version des Ordners geführt im Repository hat der Ordner aber bereits eine neue Version bekommen. Wenn ich dann explizite Änderungen an dem Ordner vor- nehmen möchte, wie bspw. Änderungen an dem "svn:ignore" Property, wird beim Commiten der Änderungen ein Fehler angezeigt, dass in der Arbeitskopie eine veraltete Version des Ordners vorliegt und an der Änderungen vorgenommen wurden im Repository aber eine neuere Version existiert wodurch es zu einem Konflikt kommt.

Workaround

Bevor man Änderungen an dem Ordner vornimmt, bei denen keine in dem Ordner enthaltene Datei involviert ist sollte man im Repository so genannte Dummy Änderungen an diesem Ordner vornehmen, sprich einen Unterordner anlegen. Danach sollte die Arbeitskopie vom Repository aktualisiert werden, bei Bedarf kann dieser neu erstellte Unterordner wieder gelöscht werden (Update danach nicht vergessen). Nach dieser Aktion sollten die Versionen im Repository und in der Arbeitskopie übereinstimmen.

Ein Anderer Bug äusert sich dadurch dass man mit Subclipse keine Branches und keine Tags anlegen kann. Woran das liegt kann ich aber mit meinen Möglichkeiten bisher nicht festellen. Es könnte sein, dass der Dienst CvsDude so etwas verhindert, oder dass der Plugin Subclipse hier auch einen Bug hat. Immerhin ist die Version 1.1.2 nur eine Entwicklerversion. Dieser Entwicklungszweig wird dann im stabilen Zweig 1.2 aufgehen.

Bald ist der 60. Jahrestag des Bombenabwurfs und es war mir bisher gar nicht so klar, welch ein Bild in den USA in der breiten Öffentlichkeit darüber herrscht. Es glauben noch viele Amerikanet tatsächlich daran, dass es richtig war die beiden Atombomben über Japan abzuwerfen. Und diejenigen, die den Auftrag damals ausgeführt haben werden bis heute noch als Helden gefeiert. Einen interessanten Artikel darüber habe ich eben im Online-Magazin Telepolis gelesen.

Da Blogs in letzter Zeit zu einer festen Größe geworden sind, habe ich mir gedacht, ich könnte mir auch so etwas zulegen. Es würde mich auch mal interessieren, ob irgendjemand hier vorbeischaut, ohne dass ich irgendwelche "Werbung" dafür mache.
